WHY ARE THESE CUFFLINKS SPECIAL
'Mellerio', a legend,
founded in 1613 (with origins dating back to 1515) by an Italian family, is the oldest high jewelry house in the world, renowned as "the jeweler to queens." Based on the Rue de la Paix in Paris since 1815, it has distinguished itself through its royal creations, pearls, transformable jewelry, and the prestigious Ballon d'Or.
Here are the highlights of its history:
Origins and Privileges (1515-1613): Originally from the Vigezzo Valley in Italy, the family settled in France in 1515. In 1613, after thwarting a plot, the family obtained exclusive privileges from Marie de Medici for the trade of precious objects, thus facilitating its rise to prominence.
Jeweler to Queens (18th-19th centuries): Mellerio became the supplier to the Court, serving Marie Antoinette, Joséphine de Beauharnais, and later Empress Eugénie.
Innovations and Historic Address: In 1815, the house established itself at 9 rue de la Paix, becoming the first jeweler in the Place Vendôme district. It distinguished itself through technical innovations, such as the flexible stem in 1854, and the creation of transformable jewelry.
Mellerio Today: The 14th and 15th generations perpetuate the tradition, with Laure-Isabelle Mellerio at the helm. The house is known for the "Mellerio Cut" (57 facets) and continues to create bespoke pieces and trophies.
These cuffliks have a very unusual system and a very elegant 'Stirrup' design.
